Hormones: Adrenaline

Image
Adrenaline is a hormone released from the adrenal glands and its major action, together with noradrenaline, is to prepare the body for fight or flight. Alternative names for adrenaline Epinephrine.                               Image of an eye showing a dilated or enlarged pupil - one of the effects of adrenaline released during a "fight or flight" response. What is adrenaline?        Adrenaline and noradrenline are two separate but related hormones and neurotransmitters. They are produced in the medulla of the adrenal glands and in some neurons of the central nervous system. They are released into the bloodstream and serve as chemical mediators, and also convey the nerve impulses to various organs. Adrenaline has many different actions depending on the type of cells it is acting upon.  However, the overall effect of adrenaline is to prepare the body for the ‘fight or fli...

How Modafinil Works on Neurotransmitters for its Nootropic Effects

Image
A while back I tried Modafinil for the purposes of a review, and shortly after uploaded a video on the matter to YouTube. This quickly became one of my most watched videos (it’s number one for ‘Modafinil’ on YouTube currently). In the video I said that Modafinil was  undoubtedly  potent and impressive for increasing focus and attention, but that it also had side effects which led to me being unable to recommend it. Despite my warnings I’ve since been contacted by lots of people asking where they can get it… kind of missing the point but demonstrating just how interested people are in this particular study drug. One of my concerns regarding Modafinil has always been the lack of long-term studies and the lack of information. We aren’t even sure  how  it affects the brain and most people seem happy to gulp it down without doing any research. That’s where this article comes in… Here I will look in more depth at precisely what Modafinil is and how it appears t...

How Modafinil Works

What are The Mechanisms of Action of Modafinil? 1) Increases Histamine Modafinil elevates hypothalamic histamine levels [ R ], a known wakefulness mechanism. Substitutes::  Fermented foods, Kombucha 2) Increases Dopamine Modafinil seems to inhibit the reuptake action of the dopamine transporter, thus leading to an increase in extracellular and thus synaptic concentrations of dopamine [ R ].  Specifically, it increases dopamine in the striatum and nucleus accumbens ( R ,  R2 ) Specifically, Modafinil works on the D1 dopamine receptors and this causes orexin neurons in the hypothalamus to activate. ( R ) Forskolin  increases  cyclic AMP  in the whole body, including in the area where orexin neurons are.   This causes these neurons to activate (long-term potentiation) and the result is we’re more wakeful. ( R ) Substitutes::   Mucuna ,  Amphetamines , ...

The Ups And Downs Of Cortisol: What You Need To Know

Image
Most of us associate  too much cortisol  with the loss of muscle and gain of more belly fat. Yuck! But too little cortisol leaves us feeling “chronically fatigued.” Neither of those things sound very appealing, and that’s just the tip of the iceberg.  Let’s talk about some cortisol basics and then briefly discuss what can go wrong when our levels get funky. Cortisol is a glucocorticoid, also known as hydrocortisone.  It’s produced in the adrenal cortex in response to stress (physical or emotional) and according to natural cycles that tend to correlate to circadian rhythms.  It is made from cholesterol and its synthesis and release is controlled by adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH). Cortisol helps us get our butts out of bed in the morning and function day to day. In the morning, cortisol rises until it peaks around 8:00am. This helps us feel bright-eyed and bushy-tailed. As the day wears on, it falls gradually, reaching its lowest levels around 3:00-4:00a...
